Why You Should Go to Westwind Orchard Now

With Fabio Chizzola's background in fashion photography, it is no wonder that the aesthetic curation of Westwind Orchard (both digitally and IRL) is on point. Chizzola and his wife Laura Ferrara purchased the 32-acre apple orchard in 2002 and set about reviving the orchard, diversifying the crop, and transitioning the land to organic practices. Aside from the  honeybee hives; and acres of apples, pears, plums, cherries, paw paws, berries, garlic, winter squash, grapes, and herbs; the Lower Whitfield road location now has a whole complex of buildings. The farm store, which sells produce, cider, and tastefully designed merch; the wood-fired pizza oven; and the tasting room surround a wide central lawn, dotted with picnic tables. Dogs and babies are welcome.

You can find Cicco, the master pizza maker, at Westwind every Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 6pm through October, spinning perfect pies made using his nonna’s recipe. The toppings include prosciutto and anchovies alongside fresh, organic produce from the farm like basil (duh), zucchini, squash blossoms, tomatoes, and more.

With Arrowood Farms brewery and Hollengold Farm across the road, this backwoods Accord road has become quite the food/craft beverage mecca. If you haven't been up that way yet this summer, here are a three reasons to check it out right now.

Get Razzed

The first raspberries of the season have been picked and are for sale in the Westwind farm store (and being stored for future batches of their signature raspberry hard cider). U-Pick raspberry season is coming soon (maybe next week), so stay tuned.

Thursdays are for Tapas

Westwind opened its new tasting room back in early May, and they're finding all sorts of fun ways to use the space. In late July, they announced that they would be opening the tasting room every Thursday for cider and Italian tapas from 5 to 10pm. On opening night, they debuted a 2017 limited-production cider called Kingston Black, and served up all sorts of yummies, like cured meats, local and Italian cheeses, housemade pickles, and Castelvetrano olives. Check their Instagram for updated menus.

The World is Your Oyster

Since Memorial Day weekend, Brooklyn Oyster Party has been hosting a weekly oyster bar pop up at Westwind Orchard. Where have we been?! Well it's not to late to jump on this bandwagon and slurp your way to brackish bliss. Oyster Party is at the Accord location every Saturday and Sunday, so scoot on over there for some freshly shucked goodness.
