Musician and performance artist James Keepnews continues to outdo himself with curating of cool out jazz nights at Quinn’s. Latest example: the pairing of guitarist Mary Halvorson and drummer Ches Smith, who will visit the club/restaurant on September 8.

Halvorson has been called “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise” by the Wall Street Journal and “NYC’s least predictable improviser” by top critic Howard Mandel. Smith is the regular drummer in Halvorson’s trio and a force unto himself, having worked with Xiu Xiu, Mr. Bungle, Fred Frith, and Halvorson’s one-time employer Marc Ribot.
