It is always great to hear success stories and how people are making health and exercise a priority in their lives. Hopefully this encourages many more to do what it takes to stay active.
Unfortunately, as a master indoor cycling instructor, presenter, and USA cycling coach, it is disturbing to read of instructors and classes that use contraindicated moves and technique in their classes, especially with beginner riders. The use of hand weights of any kind is highly discouraged in indoor cycling. Besides being unsafe, it is ineffective. Also, the fact that one can complete 300 push-ups in a single class (while on a bike), is proof or its ineffectiveness to anyone with an understanding of exercise physiology and strength training. Those of use who have tried to bring integrity to the indoor cycling industry hope that more and more instructors would start to adopt proper training techniques in their classes to provide even more benefits to their riders and clients.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss the necessity of safe and more effective indoor cycling classes.
