ART

Painting Class for Kids in Kingston

Inspired by the art of Thomas Cole and the other painters of the Hudson River School, the Hudson River Maritime Museum’s Museum Mates series is offering a unique painting program for kids on January 26 from 1 to 3pm. Held in the Kingston facility’s Wooden Boat School Classroom, the class will offer children 5-12 years old the opportunity to learn basic painting techniques and create their own piece of art. The program will include a guided tour of the Smithsonian Institute’s traveling Water/Ways exhibit; cost is $5 per child and free for adults (children and adults must be registered in advance). (845) 338-0583.

MUSIC

Wesley Harper in Catskill

Released this month, Narrations, Catskill singer-songwriter Wesley Harper’s deep-reaching debut album, brings together a brace of mystical, meditative songs that evoke his extensive travels in India and Nepal. To herald its arrival, Harper will perform at his hometown venue the Avalon Lounge on January 25 at 8:30pm supported by Rhode Island tunesmith and multi-instrumentalist Marlon Battad. Admission is $5. (518) 719-1640.

ART

Art After Hours in Poughkeepsie

Presented by local organization the Art Effect at the Poughkeepsie Trolley Barn on January 24 from 5:30 to 7:30pm, Art After Hours is a pop-up exhibit of artwork created for the group’s 2019 senior project thesis course. Attendees of the event will be able to view the art as they enjoy live music and unlimited tastings from local food vendors and craft breweries (you must be 21 for the latter, of course). Tickets are $40 for those 18 and older; $10 for those 18 and below; and $70 for couples. (845) 471-7477.
