Playwright James Goldman’s epic 1966 drama “The Lion in Winter” is currently bringing some royal intrigue to the Bridge Street Theater in Catskill in a production that runs through November 20.

The story, which was famously made into a 1968 Academy Award-winning film starring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn, depicts the personal and political conflicts of Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, their children and their guests during Christmas 1183. Bridge Street’s production is directed and designed by John Sowle and stars Leigh Strimbeck, Steven Patterson, Seth McNeill, Michael Raver, Orlando Grant, Christopher Joel Onken, and Geneva Turner.

“There isn’t a role in this piece that isn’t catnip for actors,” Patterson told theater review blog Front Mezz Junkies. “Juicy, juicy parts. Goldman endows these characters with superhuman verbal sparring abilities which leave all us mere mortals, both onstage and in the audience, gasping in admiration.”

The production features costumes by Michelle Rogers, original incidental music by N. Jennings White, and original artwork by Agam Neiman. The production stage manager is Kiara Vedovino.

“The Lion in Winter” is running November 17, 18, and 19 at 7:30pm and November 20 at 2pm at the Bridge Street Theater in Catskill. Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 at the door (students are $10).
