Tides & PhasesOn February 24, Switch Ensemble will kick off its latest tour with a performance at the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum. The tour, which is sponsored by NewMusicUSA, will also be making stops at Cornell University, the Eastman School of Music, and Buffalo State University.
The New York-based group Switch Ensemble was established to foster the talent of young composers striving to occupy the intersection of chamber music and multimedia. During their evening program at WAAM, Switch Ensemble will perform the music of Bard professor Matthew Sargent, whose contemporary compositions have been presented in concerts and installations across the US and abroad at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik festival in Germany. The performance is part of WAAM's 2018 Dialogue Series which looks at emerging trends in art and music.
Sargent's recent work focuses on the layering of instruments for a simple but potent effect. His strings piece, "Tide," features 10 layers of violin and cello for an effect that Daniel McNamara of Sequenza21 has described as a powerfully organic experience.”
The musicians of Switch Ensemble will also perform three recent pieces by Bard students Clara Allison, Henry Birdsey, and Telo Hoy.
