Steve Slagle Blows into Tarrytown

The recently opened Jazz Forum has been bringing some top names to the lower Hudson Valley, and this month the Tarrytown venue is welcoming yet another: saxophonist Steve Slagle, who will bring his quartet there on April 29.

Slagle is perhaps best known for his stint as the musical director of the Mingus Big Band in the 1990s. Prior to that plum gig, he worked with the likes of Ray Barretto, Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, Woody Herman, Brother Jack McDuff, and Stevie Wonder; more recently he’s played with Joe Lovano, Elvis Costello, the Beastie Boys, Dr. John, St. Vincent, and Dave Stryker, with whom he’s co-led the Stryker-Slagle Band since the late ’90s. A gifted arranger as well, Slagle has taught at the Manhattan School of Music, Rutgers University, the New School, and NYU.

Here he is, performing the bebop standard “Hot House” with the Yakov Okun Quartet in Moscow, circa 2011:

The Steve Slagle Quartet will perform at the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, New York, on April 29 at 8pm. Tickets are $15 and $20. For more information, call (914) 631-1000 or visit
