- Popa Chubby
Popa Chubby’s a big man—with a big sound. Born Ted Horowitz in the Bronx, the guitarist and singer discovered the blues via the Rolling Stones, Cream, and Jimi Hendrix and played music in the style before taking a gig as a backing musician for punk icon Richard Hell. After working with Irish singer-songwriter Pierce Turner, he released several albums on his Laughing Bear label before signing to Sony Music/Okeh Records and recording Booty and the Beast with legendary producer Tom Dowd (Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles).
Amid making several albums for blues imprint Blind Pig and other labels Chubby toured Europe, the US, and the UK, building on his already considerable following in those regions. Despite being mostly off the road during the pandemic, he kept busy, releasing the double-CD anthology Prime Cuts: The Very Best of the Beast from the East in 2019, It’s a Mighty Hard Road in 2020, and Tinfoil Hat in 2021. His newest effort is this year’s Emotional Gangster.
Popa Chubby will perform at Daryl’s House in Pawling on December 30 at 8pm. Tickets are $32.84.
