Poem: In the Middle of Nowhere

            1.
This much you know:
for every positive number,
there's a negative
stretching to infinity
in either direction
and in between:
cero, nol, nothing.
Of course, there's a question
as to whether it really exists.
It's there because we put it there.
We like the idea
as long as it doesn't apply to us.
Anyway, it's necessary.
If you take one away from one, what's left?
Look, you have to start somewhere.
This is what comes
before the beginning
and at the end: 0

            2.
Or maybe it's where
we come from and go to—
where we go through.
Nowhere we know
before we get there
or after we arrive.
