Parting Shot: Candy Curls
Candy Curls, Will Cotton, oil on linen, 36" x 30", 2006

SUNY Ulster visiting artist Will Cotton creates confectionary worlds of temptation where nude women lounge on sugar beaches, bathe in chocolate, and float on whipped cream clouds. His landscapes are candy wonderlands where lily pads are replaced by flans in caramel ponds and swamps bubble over with root beer. Combining the influence of Hudson River School painters and 18th-century masters with his sinfully sweet sirens, he creates scenes that are both classic and otherworldly. Before starting his paintings he builds models out of homemade pastries—think gingerbread houses in better neighborhoods. Will Cotton’s solo show at Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery will be exhibited from October 11 through November 9. Cotton will lecture on his work on October 11 at 7pm, followed by an opening reception. SUNY Ulster, Stone Ridge. (845) 687-5113; Portfolio: www.willcotton.com.
