Absolute Auctions and Realty, an auction company located in Pleasant Valley, is selling at public auction the entire documentary photography collection of acclaimed National Geographic photographer Chris Rainier, which was acquired in a legal sale.
Rainier, whose award-winning photographs can be seen in magazines and museums, uses his medium to garner social and environmental awareness, documenting strife and humanitarian crises across the globe, such as the Bosnian civil war, Indonesia in the aftermath of a tsunami, and other instances of famine and war. In addition to the preservation of indigenous cultures, Rainier has documented contemporary cultural phenomena, like Burning Man.
Rainier’s extensive travelling to the far, sometimes forgotten and ebbing, areas of all seven continents is an effort “to show spiritual traditions from our past in the present, and become part of the process in some small way of helping preserve life for future generations.”
Many of the prints can be seen in Rainier’s books, like Ancient Marks, a study of tattooing and scarification in traditional and contemporary cultures, and Cultures on the Edge, a journey of cultural tourism in places like Peru, South Africa, Tibet, the Arctic, and more.
Bidding for this auction is exclusively online at AARauctions.com. However, bidders may call ahead for an appointment to preview the items at the Absolute Auction Center (located at 45 South Avenue, Pleasant Valley, NY).
AAR has been a leading auction house for over 70 years. They auction everything from specialty collections to real estate to antiques and estate to vehicles and commercial liquidations. As per their name, their gallery is as diverse as Rainier’s expeditions.
