If you're spending the afternoon in Red Hook on January 26, there is a good chance you might see a giant. Along with 20 friends, artist Andres San Millan will be carrying his 12-foot-tall "Man" sculpture approximately two miles from his home in Barrytown to Taste Budd's Cafe in Red Hook at 2pm.
The "Man" is a crouching figure inspired by Native American history and made entirely of driftwood. Its arrival is planned for 4pm with a reception to follow. The piece will be on display through the year.
Why transport the statue by foot? San Millan says, "There's something very appealing about the physical experience of carrying the large sculpture on foot. It would be much easier to use a truck, but in doing so we would miss the opportunity for ritual and for the collective creation of meaning."
The artist co-founded the nonprofit Cocoon Theater in Rhinebeck with his wife, Marguerite. The snow date for the move is January 27.
