Margaret Bowland: Power

7d708653_bowland_power.jpg
Margaret Bowland: Power, the artist’s third NYC solo exhibition, marries canonical imagery with contemporary references to blur fact and fiction, confront cultural hierarchies, and offer alternate narratives. Bowland’s new paintings construct an anachronistic world dense with symbolic imagery from a variety of cultural and historical sources, drawing from Central Asian, African, and European iconographies. In this maelstrom of references, Bowland’s characters gracefully bear the weight of complex histories, reckoning with enduring issues of race, gender, age, beauty, and agency.
