Lincoln Mayorga is one of those figures who’s been essential to the evolution of popular music, even if most listeners have never heard of him. The classically trained pianist, arranger, and Columbia County resident has worked on the scores to dozens of blockbuster movies (Chinatown, The Rose, Pete’s Dragon) and TV shows (“Little House on the Prairie,” “Dallas”) and with artists ranging from Barbara Streisand to the Moscow Philharmonic and the Standells. On February 9, Mayorga and trumpeter Rob Fisch will present “An Evening of Jazz Classics” at Spencertown Academy.

“This core genre is the primary basis for jazz reinterpretation and derivative works for the past century of American music,” says Fisch. “Many refer to this genre of music as the Great American Songbook, but I just call it great music.” Joining featured performers Mayorga and Fisch will be bassist Rich Syracuse and drummer Gene Garone.

Although it likely won’t be among the favorites written by Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and other prewar tunesmiths promised for the program, I’ve always been partial to Mayorga’s 1970 arrangement of Stephen Stills’s “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”:

Lincoln Mayorga and Rob Fisch will perform “An Evening of Jazz Classics” at Spencertown Academy in Spencertown, New York, on February 9 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20. For more information, call (518) 392-3693 or visit www.spencertownacademy.org.

Hey now, we still know how to brew that stuff from scratch.
