Over the decades, the unique family event has attracted thousands of spectators to cheer on professional artists, families, and kids as they roll down lower Broadway to the Strand in their whimsical mobile creations. The derby sponsors workshops for any participants who may need extra help in constructing their cars and encourages local community organizations to join in the fun and build a soapbox car as a team.
At the starting lineup of the event, all cars will be inspected for steering and stopping capabilities. Any entries that have been determined to have insufficient breaking will be required to go down the hill with a rope attached them and a guide person following to keep the car from speeding away. Participating entries will be judged for their creativity, originality, and engineering. At the end of the race, live performances will add to the fun, which will conclude with an awards ceremony in TR Gallo Park.
The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby will take place in the city’s historic Rondout district on August 14. The race will start at 1pm.
