Born and raised on Long Island, James is widely known for his Emmy-nominated role as Doug Heffernan on the comedy series “The King of Queens,” which ran for nine seasons (1998-2007) on CBS. He also starred in the CBS/Sony sitcom “Kevin Can Wait.”
James has also appeared in the films Hitch (2005), I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007), Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), Grown Ups (2010), Zookeeper (2011), Here Comes the Boom (2012), and Pixels (2015) and has done voice work for Monster House (2006), Barnyard (2006), and the first three films of the Hotel Transylvania franchise (2012–2018). In 2001, he brought his stand-up act to TV with “Sweat the Small Stuff,” a one-hour special for Comedy Central. In 2005, he and Ray Romano executive produced and starred in the HBO Sports Special Making the Cut: The Road to Pebble Beach, a documentary about the Pebble Beach Pro Am Golf Tournament that was nominated for a Sports Emmy. His second comedy special, “Never Don’t Give Up,” premiered on Netflix in April 2018.
