For jazz fans, August is shaping up to be a fine month, indeed. On Tuesday, I highlighted the upcoming Hudson Valley Jazz Festival (August 9-12) and today I’m back to let you know about an August 12’s Hudson JazzWorks concert by the great French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc at Hudson Hall.

Born in Paris and now based in Montreal, Pilc is in the post-bop/mainstream Bill Evans school, but also brings more avant-garde touches and his own wistful, highly personal Parisian flavor to the music. With his trio he’s cut some magical live albums at New York jazz shrines Sweet Basil and Iridium, as well as a clutch of fine studio dates for the revered Dreyfus label.

Here’s Pilc in 2011, taking a highly inventive approach to the Brecht-Weil standard “Mack the Knife”:

Jean-Michel Pilc will perform with Armen Donelian, saxophonist Marc Mommaas, and the participants of the Hudson Jazz Workshop at Hudson Hall in Hudson, New York, on August 12 at 4pm. Tickets are $20 ($16 members; free to students 18 and under). For more information, call (518) 822-1438 or visit http://hudsonhall.org/.
