Now in its fifth decade, Upstate Films, with locations in Rhinebeck and Saugerties, continues to hone its reputation as a presenter of diverse and independent and mainstream movies. On January 12, Upstate’s Starr Cinema in Rhinebeck will screen Isle of Hope, a touching new drama directed by Damian Romay and starring Dianne Ladd and Mary Stuart Masterson. Part of its Close Up series, the showing will feature a Q&A with Hudson Valley resident Masterson and Ladd via Skype.

“Victoria (Mary-Stuart Masterson) is a university professor who has a grudge with her self-absorbed mother, the well-known actress, Carmen Crawford (Diane Ladd), for crushing her dreams of becoming a playwright,” reads the film’s capsule synopsis. “But when Carmen suffers a life-threatening stroke and wakes up thinking she is living 15 years in the past, Victoria is given a unique opportunity to figure out where her life went off track and start fresh with her mother. Damian Romay’s poignant film celebrates second chances and deep familial love.”

Isle of Hope will be shown at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck on January 12 at 7pm. The Q&A with Mary-Stuart Masterson and Dianne Ladd will following the film. Tickets are $14 (members $10).
