For 40 years, Rhinebeck resident John Duke Kisch has maintained the Separate Cinema Archive, the most extensive private holdings of black film memorabilia in the world, containing over 38,000 movie posters and photographs from 35 countries. This month, Kisch published Separate Cinema: The First 100 Years of Black Poster Art (Reel Art Press), a coffee table stunner containing over 250 movie posters, from D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation to Lee Daniels's The Butler, with a foreword by Henry Louis Gates and an afterword by Spike Lee.
