Fall is, arguably, the most glorious season in the Hudson Valley. It’s apple-picking and harvest time, the leaves are ablaze in eye-popping colors, and the temperatures are friendly enough to bust out that favorite sweater and lighter jacket ahead of the coming winter climes. A perfect way to celebrate this wonderful time of year is the Ashokan Center’s Fall Family Fun Fest on October 16.

Featuring fresh apple cider pressing (demos and tasting), pumpkin painting, blacksmithing, broom making, live music, seasonal food, guided hikes, and horse-drawn hayrides, this daytime event promises fun for all ages. And given that the center is comanaged by renowned folk duo Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, it’s no surprise that live music is part of the program as well. In addition to a performance by Ungar and Mason at noon, there’ll be live sets by the Gold Hope Duo at 11am and the Strawberry Hill Fiddlers at 1pm.

Founded in 2008 to inspire learning and build community through shared experiences in nature, history, music, and art, the Ashokan Center is an independent music and nature nonprofit. The site has been declared an Historic District on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. The land it’s situated on was a favored hunting and fishing ground for the Munsee Indians for generations and became home to Americans of European descent in the 1730s.

The Fall Family Fun Fest will take place at the Ashokan Center in Olivebridge on October 16 from 10 am to 4pm. Tickets are $5 and kids under 12 are free. (Crafts and food are available for a small additional fee.)
