While the switch to local food sourcing has transformed the food and beverage industry, there are some things that will just never grow here. Like bananas and sugarcane and cacao, but most importantly: coffee. Still, you can opt for locally roasted coffee. With the rise of the specialty coffee industry over the last 30 years, small-scale roasteries have cropped up all over the Hudson Valley, with many prioritizing small-lot and single-origin coffees that are fair trade or farmer-direct. Here are all the Hudson Valley coffee roasters that we know about. If we missed one, drop a line in the comments below.

Columbia County

Hudson Roastery | Hudson


Hudson Roastery first appeared on the scene a little over a year ago selling their organic, small batch coffee roasts weekly at the Hudson Farmers Market, and just opened their brick-and-mortar coffee shop and roasting facility. In addition to serving coffee drinks and pastries, the new cafe location doubles as a wine bar with cheese and charcuterie. Check out their signature organic coffee blend––the Rip Van Winkle, a light/medium roast with Nicaraguan, Peruvian, and Mexican beans, a cinnamon color, and a nutty cocoa taste for $9. Also try the farmers’ market fan favorite Catskill Campfire, an organic medium roast made with single origin Ethiopian beans that with citrusy and sweet chocolate notes for $9. Their new limited edition coffee the Bootleg Reserve is a handcrafted whiskey barrel coffee made with single origin Peruvian beans that has both a sweet and spicy taste for $15. 


Dutchess County

Big Mouth Coffee Roasters | Beacon

Big Mouth Coffee Roasters in Beacon is a specialty roastery and coffee shop focused on single-origin and microlot coffees that prioritize transparency and familiarity with their growing regions. Gatuya, sourced from the Gatuya Coffee Factory operated by the New Murrarandia Farmers Cooperative Society in the Muranga region in Kenya, offers notes of grapefruit clove, and honey ($20). Another product, Tega and Tula, is sourced from two farms in the Kaffa region of Ethiopia owned by Ethiopian coffee producer Ahadu Woubhset. These award-winning organic beans are traceable down to the specific plot of land they were grown on, with notes of blueberry jam, kiwi, lemongrass, and apricot ($18). Other products include the Las Lajas from Costa Rica, Gayo Sakdan from Sumatra, Tano Batak from Sumatra, and Big Blend by House Medium––a specially crafted blend of two single-origin coffees that are a smooth medium roast with a citrusy, sweet milk chocolate taste. Online orders are roasted on Monday and Tuesday and shipped on Wednesday. Drop by the shop for a hot drink or a bag of coffee, or pop into Black Dot in Stone Ridge, which uses and sells Big Mouth.

Irving Farm | Millerton


In 1996, David Elwell and Steve Leven founded Irving Farm in Gramercy Park. Seeing an appetite for specialty coffee, they decided to get more involved with their product and transformed the small carriage house at their upstate home in Millerton into a roastery at a time when roasting wasn’t even legal in New York City. Today, in addition to their original location at 71 Irving Place, they have cafes all throughout Manhattan. Their coffee is sourced from sustainable, small producers, and they roast a curated selection of single origin, small-lot b from each season at their state-of-the-art facility. A standout is the Colombia Microlot Series produced by Filipe Barragan in Huila, Columbia with chocolate and red fruit flavors for $18. Another single-origin product is the Blackstrap Espresso Roast with rich notes of a molasses, the tang of orange zest, and bittersweet chocolate flavor.

Westchester County

Bear Mountain Coffee | Mahopac


Bear Mountain Coffee Roasters is an artisanal micro roastery that roasts their coffees to order for ultimate freshness. Some of their single-origin coffees include the medium roast Costa Rican Tarrazu. Known as the “hard bean” in Costa Rica, it has a smooth yet full flavor for $13. For a bold medium roast with apricot notes try the Ethiopian Sidamo for $13. And if you only want a little caffeine kick from your coffee––check out their Half Calf––a 50/50 mix of their decaf Columbian and regular Colombian Popayan coffee blend for $13. They also offer speciality blends, flavored, certified organic, and decaffeinated coffees, and espresso. Pinebrook Roasters | White Plains


Pinebrook Coffee Roasters in White Plains offers small batch, single origin, certified Fair Trade and/or organic coffee roasted in Brooklyn and Westchester. Their fresh-roasted coffee samplers, with selections from Guatemala, Honduras, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Peru, and Tanzania, allow you to try three coffees of your choice from different regions for $15.65. A stand-out is the Brazil Cerrado––a dark roast coffee with a dark chocolate taste and nutty notes for $14.88. Got a roaster at home? Try Pinebrook’s Fair Trade, premium green coffee beans from Peru. Their products can also be found at Bronxville, Chappaqua, Cunningham Park Queens, Hudson Yard, Irvington Farmers markets and more listed on their website.

Coffee Labs | Tarrytown


Coffee Labs in Tarrytown is an independent roastery and coffee house that has worked with sustainable coffee growers since May 2003. Check out their best-selling coffee, the Doghouse, a blend of light and dark roasted South American coffees with warm spices, blackberry and dark chocolate flavors for $11.09. Their award-winning espresso Circus Dog is a blend of Indian and South American coffees curated by owner Mike Love when the shop first opened with a rich, smooth finish and cacao, walnut, and black cherry tasting notes for $11.25. The Aida Batlle Kilimanjaro, grown on a volcano in El Salvador by award-winning coffee producer Aida Batlle, has sweet notes of citrus, berries, bananas, and rose hip for $32.50. You can also find bakery goods like baguettes, brioche, cranberry pecan, olive batards, and whole wheat breads. The Green Restaurant Association has certified their roastery a three-star Green Restaurant, and they are an 11-time winner of Best of Westchester.

Ulster County

Monkey Joe's Roasting Company | Kingston


Monkey Joe Roasting Company opened in midtown Kingston in 2000, modeled after a European coffee bar with a tin ceiling, fireplace, tiled floor, and schoolhouse lights. The coffee shop roasts small batches, single origin, specialty-grade coffee from all over the world––including sustainably sourced, Rainforest Alliance, Shade Grown, and Fair Trade-certified coffees. One of their featured products is the Ethiopia Harrar, a wild and fruity single-origin coffee with sweet cacao nibs and strawberry notes for $15.99. Another is the India Monsoon Malabar, a coffee roasted to mimic the effect of coffee caught in the dampness of the ships when it was originally transported, creating a singular cup with low acidity and an earthy finish for $15.99. Some of their other coffee options include Jazzy Joe decaf and Hazelnut-flavored coffee. Head to the local favorite for lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and non-espresso drinks, organic teas, iced and blended frosts, Italian sodas.

Bluestone Roasting Company | Saugerties

Bluestone Roasting Company in Saugerties roasts small-batch coffee from around the world. One of their most popular products include the Bluestone Blend, a medium roast coffee with smooth chocolate and lemon notes with medium acidity for $13. The Guatemalan Huehuetenago Candelaria has hints of brown sugar, caramel, raisin, and chocolate for $14.25. One of their fair trade and organic roasts is the Tapachula for $15. Sourced from Mexico and produced by women who are paid a living wage, this coffee has sweet toffee and tart lemon notes to it. On their cafe menu, you’ll find an all-day brunch dishes like the Breakfast Panini with bacon, egg, and cheese ($5.50), a Lox Burrito with lox, peppers, onions, cream cheese, capers,and scrambled eggs ($9.25), French toast, and bagels. They also have lunch options like the Turkey Club with bacon, lettuce, tomato, turkey, swiss cheese, and mayo ($8.50), pastries, and fresh-pressed juices like the Blue Mountain, with carrot, ginger, and apple ($6).

Phillies Bridge Coffee Co. | New Paltz

Phillies Bridge Coffee Co. in New Paltz is a specialty micro coffee roaster. When sourcing, founders Renee and Joe Salamone prioritize climate, elevation, ripeness at harvest time, processing methods, and brew method. Try their Kanake A, with citrus, bergamot, and sweet candy apple notes, sourced from the Kiambu region in Kenya for $17. Another product is the Antigua Hunapu sourced from the highland valley in Antigua, Guatemala––one of the most famous coffee growing regions in the world. Try this blackberry, dark chocolate, and caramel tasting coffee for $16. Their Rwanda Gakenke FW A Fair Trade coffee comes from the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, which employs a predominantly female workforce and provides benefits to local families. The coffee, $17, has mandarin, orange, apricot, and dark chocolate notes.

Sullivan County

Java Love Coffee Roasting Co.


Java Love Coffee Roasting Company started in 2011 with a storefront on Kauneonga Lake in the Sullivan Catskills. They roast organic, Fair Trade, and Rainforest Alliance coffee in small batches and practice sustainability with compostable service items and 95% recycled waste. In addition to their flagship cafe and roaster, they have one location in Suffern and two in New Jersey. Some of their single-origin, Rainforest Alliance products include the Columbia Jardin Excelso––a creamy coffee with raisin, chocolate, and caramel flavors for $14. Another is the Costa Rica Rio Negro––a medium roast with a blend of sweet tangerines, graham cracker, and cocoa flavor for $14. Check out their Hudson Valley blend, which is a smooth roast of hazelnut, berry, and sweet floral flavors for $15. They also have organic tea options, such as chamomile, citrus ginger, earl grey, and jasmine green. And get a chocolate chip cookie or a raw breakfast bar to go with your drink at the bakery. Twin Peaks Coffee & Donuts | Tannersville

Twin Peaks Coffee and Donuts in Tannersville is more cafe than roastery, though they do roast their coffee in-house. They also offer made-to-order doughnuts, breakfast dishes, and soups, salads, and sandwiches for lunch. You can get a latte, espresso, cappuccino, macchiato, chai, and an americano with soy and almond milk options. Check out their Southwestern Burrito with scrambled eggs, green pepper, onion, salsa, and cheddar cheese and their Donut Sliders––egg, cheese bacon or sausage on a donut. And try their weekly soup options, quiches, traditional BLT sandwiches and grilled cheeses.

Orange County

Noble Coffee Roasters | Campbell Hall


Noble Coffee Roasters in Campbell Hall, owned by Robert & Paul Decka, roasts organic coffees such as the Kenya AA––a dark roast with a heavy body and cocoa notes for $12.95, or the light roast Ethiopian blend with a nutty and earthy flavor for $12.95. Noble Coffee also offers a breakfast menu, with choices like get an Arugula Egg Sandwich on sourdough bread with bacon, chive cream cheese, and lemon-dressed arugula ($4.95) daily from 7-11am, then a Spinach Pita with spinach, feta cheese, parmesan cheese, and eggs baked into filo dough ($4.25) on the lunch menu from 11am-4pm. And for some late night fun, grab a Chipotle Turkey BLT on sourdough bread with lettuce, tomato, bacon, chipotle mayo, and white American cheese ($7.75) from 4-7pm. North River Roasters | Poughkeepsie


North River Roasters in Poughkeepsie owned by Feza Oktay began in 2015 with a community-supported coffee roasting program modeled after farm CSAs to make locally roasted coffee available to the community. Their coffee is used in coffee shops, restaurants, and educational institutes around the Hudson Valley. Some of their single origin coffees include the Indonesian Bajawa Komodo Dragon, sourced from the Ngada district located on the slopes of the Inerie Volcano, with brown sugar, cedar, and bakers chocolate notes for $16. Also check out their Fair Trade, single-origin, SMBC Bird Friendly, volcanic roast the Maya Honduras Decaf, with hints of cacao and raisin for $18. Formerly Local

FosterBuilt Coffee | Bovina Center Detroit

Many in the area are familiar with the brand FosterBuilt Coffee, which started roasting coffee in Bovina Center in an 1850s farmhouse and barn in 2012. The brand grew its reputation for roasting their coffee on a barbecue, giving it a slightly smoky flavor and the aroma of a Catskill campfire. Owner Mark Foster has recently relocated to Detroit, but FosterBuilt Coffee is still available online for the faithful.
