Utilizing handpicked actors, the docudrama gives voice to those currently living under the oppressive autocracy in Belarus. “We began working on the film before the invasion of Ukraine, but now that the Belarusian dictator, Aleksandr Lukashenko, has allied himself with the Russian military, and Belarus is a staging ground for Putin’s war, this story becomes even more relevant,” say directors Steve Clorfeine and Steve Wangh. “We made the film with a cast from nine nationalities to portray fourteen Belarusian citizens who were caught up in the 2020 presidential election crackdown. As directors we chose an international cast to portray dissidents whose narratives Belarusian playwright Andrei Kureichik transformed into a play. Our casting was based on the reality that at this point most countries in the world have experienced or are experiencing severe autocratic repression of any form of dissent.”

Voices of the New Belarus will be screened at Green Kill in Kingston on December 2 at 5pm and via livestream. The showing is a fundraising event, with proceeds going to support the film’s production costs. The in-person audience is limited to 40 people. Tickets are $15 for in person or $10 for livestream viewers.
