During Post-Reconstruction America many blacks living in certain counties in southern states were forced to make a decision to either leave town or be killed. Forcefully driven out of their communities the blacks had to leave behind their possessions and the land they owned. Today the all white towns do not discuss their dark history. Banished follows three African American families as they return to the towns that their ancestors were chased out of. Attempting to get the land that rightfully belonged to their kin, the families struggle towards an almost hopeless goal. The documentary by Marco Williams, acknowledges a fact that is generally unspoken, blacks are still not welcome in many towns parts of this country.
