17th Century/21st Century: The Mohicans and the Dutch: A Discussion of Land Ownership, Deeds and Pre-Colonial Stone Walls

350 years ago deeds were signed between the Dutch and the Mohicans for the Native lands that now comprise Athens, New York. What did the two cultures really understand about this transaction? The evenings’ discussion will explore local transactions, then and now, as well as the very differing views of land ownership and the enduring implications. With Bonney Hartley, Assistant Historic Preservation Officer of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans Indians, Rene VanSchaack, Executive Director of the Greene County Industrial Development Agency and Matt Bua, artist, eco-architect and intuitive builder.
