Atlas Studios’ Jazz at Atlas series continues to fight the good fight by bringing much-need live jazz to Newburgh. This month promises an enticing engagement by the innovative new sextet We Free Stings.
Featuring Jason Hwang and Gwen Laster on violins, Alexander Waterman on cello, Melanie Dyer on viola, Ken Filiano on bass, Michael Wimberly on percussion, We Free Strings “embodies the ethos of free jazz, both embracing and dismantling Western music and traditional jazz conventions…[and] sounds in and beyond blues, experimenting with tropes in the black music lexicon and aesthetic values that inhabit Afro-Atlantic culture up to contemporary black experience in the US while signaling present and future freedom.”
YouTube yields no video of We Free Stings as of yet (I told you the band was new), so here’s Gwen Laster performing on local TV:
We Free Stings will appear at Atlas Studios in Newburgh, New York, on November 18 at 8pm. Admission is $15. For more information, call (845) 391-8855 or visit http://www.atlasnewburgh.com/.
