The lyrics to “Old Man Trump” were written by Guthrie in 1950, when the folk icon was living in Brooklyn as a slam against his landlord Fred C. Trump, the father of Donald Trump. Discovered by scholar Will Kaufman, they suggest that the elder Trump discriminated against the African Americans who wanted to be tenants of the Coney Island housing complex in which Guthrie was renting an apartment. Irion is well qualified to sing Guthrie songs, as his wife and erstwhile performing partner is none other than Sarah Lee Guthrie, Woody’s granddaughter.
Johnny Irion will open for and perform with Chatham County Line at Club Helsinki in Hudson, New York, on November 5 at 9pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show. For more information, call (518) 828-4800 or visit http://helsinkihudson.com/index.html.
