Johnny Irion Releases Anti-Trump Track, Returns to Hudson

Johnny Irion

Last year, I profiled Western Massachusetts singer-songwriter Johnny Irion to tie in with launch of his latest band, U.S. Elevator. This week, Irion is back on my radar, thanks to an upcoming show at Club Helsinki and the release of a timely track that finds U.S. Elevator collaborating with Mack McCaughn of Superchunk and Tim Bluhm of the Mother Hips: “Old Man Trump,” a recording that sets some lost Woody Guthrie lyrics to original new music.

The lyrics to “Old Man Trump” were written by Guthrie in 1950, when the folk icon was living in Brooklyn as a slam against his landlord Fred C. Trump, the father of Donald Trump. Discovered by scholar Will Kaufman, they suggest that the elder Trump discriminated against the African Americans who wanted to be tenants of the Coney Island housing complex in which Guthrie was renting an apartment. Irion is well qualified to sing Guthrie songs, as his wife and erstwhile performing partner is none other than Sarah Lee Guthrie, Woody’s granddaughter.

Take a gander at this video for the recording:

Johnny Irion will open for and perform with Chatham County Line at Club Helsinki in Hudson, New York, on November 5 at 9pm. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show. For more information, call (518) 828-4800 or visit
