Camp Cripple Creek is being hosted by repertoire group The Weight, which features former Band guitarist Jim Weider and percussionist Randy Ciarlante, keyboardist Brian Mitchell of the Levon Helm Band, and keyboardist/saxophonist Marty Grebb, who worked with Rick Danko and Richard Manuel. The camp will celebrate the legendary local Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted group with concerts, performances, interactive workshops, teaching clinics focused on both music and history, and talks from industry professionals who were close at hand and will be “accompanied by plentiful on-stage jamming with the attendees, open jam rooms with backline equipment provided, [and] open mics and song-circles around the campfires.” Guest performers include Jackie Greene and Happy Traum, and there will be talks by Band producer John Simon and photographer Elliott Landy. The four-day program will wrap up with a visit to Big Pink, the sacred site of The Band’s 1967 work with Bob Dylan, and move on to Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock for a camp finale “family picnic”-style gourmet barbeque and a concert by The Weight and Friends.
Here, Weider and Grebb tell us a little about the camp:
