Women today can hardly escape the message: When it comes to feeding your baby, breast is best. And while the vast majority of women start out breastfeeding after birth, most find that it's not smooth sailing on the milky white sea. A 2013 study at UC Davis surveyed 418 new mothers and found that by day three, 92 percent of them experienced some trouble breastfeeding, such as latching problems, nipple pain, or low milk production.

Help is on the way. Earlier this month, the Dutchess County Department of Health opened its Breastfeeding Support & Education Center, offering information and training to new mothers and mamas-to-be. The Center's walk-in clinic will be open on Fridays from 10am to 2pm. Appointments and breastfeeding support and education services will also be available by phone, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., by calling (845) 486-3419.

It truly takes a village when comes to breastfeeding. The UC Davis study surmised that the biggest reason why women struggled with breastfeeding was lack of support in the first few weeks. Access to certified lactation consultants like the ones at the new Center can make all the difference.
