October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and several events across the Hudson Valley aim to raise the public consciousness about a social problem that's often shrouded in secrecy.

In Woodstock, a special yoga class will raise money for Exhale to Inhale, an organization devoted to empowering survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through yoga. Tara Sanders, ETI's program director for Upstate New York, will teach the class on Monday, Oct. 26, 7-8:30pm, at Euphoria Yoga in Woodstock. The class will include a brief talk about domestic violence/sexual assault and trauma, followed by gentle yoga, deep relaxation, and meditation. Suggested donation is $20.

In support of ETI, Sunflower Natural Foods in Rhinebeck is giving patrons the option to donate $1, $3, or $5 at checkout. Currently, ETI also offers two weekly classes to domestic violence/sexual abuse survivors at shelters in Kingston.

In Newburgh, Safe Homes of Orange County continues a monthlong series of events, including an "Orange Wears Purple Day" on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and the Annual Celebration of Hope charity dinner on Thursday, Oct. 22, at Villa Venezia in Middletown. Safe Homes offers a 24-hour emergency hotline, a 17-bed shelter facility, legal assistance, weekly support groups, and more. For event information, call 845-562-5365, ext. 101.
