So many of us hope that we can cocoon our daughters so they will emerge from the clutches of adolescence with their self-confidence intact, like a butterfly. But we watch with trepidation as they're saturated in unrealistic ideals of perfect women with perfect lives whose sole purpose is to care for everyone around them. And mostly, our girls do rise above it, at least eventually. But sometimes our girls need a hero to help build them up. Drawing from years of event planning experience, the new Kingston-based organization, Beautiful Me, is ready to take those girls under wing and give them their own to fly.
Since the first Beautiful Me event was held in spring 2012 at SPACE in Highland, letters of thanks have been pouring in to Karin Hlywiak, the organizer. The attention and education donated to the ten selected girls that day changed their lives, they said.
Pulling together another team of businesses wishing to donate to the cause of tomorrow’s women, the next event is set for July 23rd at 3 West Club in NYC. The selected girls will be treated to pampering by locals like Lizette Rachel Cosmetics & Skincare, Brown’s Florist, JJ’s Rockin’ Cupcakes, and Bellisimo Fotography, and motivational speakers like Jessica Melore who speaks about experience as a source of life-altering strength and awareness, and Cynthia Bazin who focuses her mentoring specifically on women. A DJ will help create a fun-filled vibe, and there will be swag bags! It’s all in service of a message: everyone deserves to feel beautiful.
“Our Beautiful Me event is a day filled with positivity, pampering, encouragement and fun!” says Hlywiak. “We want the participants to be comfortable in their own skin and to break out of their shell. This day will serve as a stepping stone in their journey to becoming confident, proud young women. We want them to know that the great feeling they will have during this special day should be what they feel every day, regardless of the struggles they've had in the past.”
It’s the last chance to nominate girls aged 10-18 before the deadline on July 15th, so visit the Beautiful Me website to learn more. And keep an eye out because future events will feature boys and LGBTQ kids!
