Undoubtedly one of the most crucial musicians on the Hudson Valley music scene is keyboardist Bruce Katz. The Woodstock-area resident is a solid, seriously deep player who over the years has brought his soulful chops to the bands of Gregg Allman, Delbert McClinton, John Hammond, and others. But now he’s returned to focus on his own music with his aptly named eighth album, Homecoming (American Showplace Music), which he’ll be celebrating with a record release show by the Bruce Katz Band at the Bearsville Theater next week.

Yet another tour de force of gritty, greasy blues grooves, Homecoming features the band’s regular lineup of Katz on organ, Chris Vitarello on guitar, and Ralph Rosen on drums. Guest players include Katz’s band mate in the trio CKS drummer Randy Ciarlante (Levon Helm Band, the Weight) and John Hammond, who calls Katz “one of the greatest keyboard artists I’ve ever heard.”

How about a spoonful of what Hammond and I are talkin’ about?

The Bruce Katz Band will perform at the Bearsville Theater on December 20 at 9pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For more information, call (845) 679-4406 or visit www.bearsvilletheater.com.
