Formed in 2011 as Sex Cult by drummer Michael Peery and singer Chris Shaw, the quintet played their first show three months after their first practice, immediately gaining a local fan base and grabbing the attention of Goner label head Eric Oblivian. After a name change and the release of a couple of now impossible-to-find singles, Ex-Cult headed to San Francisco to record with Segall. The resulting Ex-Cult rocks with distorted guitar, pummeling rhythms, and snarling vocals. Those qualities are once again in abundance on Midnight Passenger, which was produced by veteran Memphis studio whiz Doug Easley, but on the new disc the group brings a deeper texture to the sound via newly added psychedelic and post-punk touches.
