As Hudson Valley residents, we're spoiled. We're only about an hour or so from New York City, but we get to relax in the country nestled between beautiful farmlands. And while visitors from all over come to visit our local farms, the agriculture business could still use a hand "getting put on the map."
Local artist Maria Reidelbach of the Corn Cow Company decided to to just that--her campaign, Stick to Local Food, will provide blank maps of over 20 Rondout Valley farms. Each farm has a personalized colorful sticker to add to your map when you give them a visit. The maps will be distributed to Roudout Elementary School students (hopefully Kingston and Ellenville schools as well), in local stores, and even in shops along the thruway to encourage tourists to visit and support our farms. The map includes vegetable and fruit farms, u-picks, nurseries, horse farms, a Christmas tree farm and even an edible miniature golf course. Visiting all of the farms on the map gets you a special completion sticker as proof of your many agricultural adventures.
On the campaign's Kickstarter page, donations of $5 dollars or more get you colorful t-shirts, aprons, special stickers, map messages, advertising, limited edition versions of the map, and more. The campaign makes it affordable for farmers to take part in this low-tech and low-cost advertising technique, get the word out about their businesses, and continue to thrive in the Hudson Valley, providing us with great food and gorgeous scenery.
