Alternative and folk singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant releases her sixth studio album on May 6. The collection of songs is self-titled and self-produced by the artist with completely original material, composed after a decade of songwriting. As written on her website, she says the album represents “taking the measure of lives lived by surveying the damage: love gained and lost, regret, denial, surrender, greed, destructiveness, defeat, and occasional triumph.”
NPR's First Watch released a video of Merchant’s latest song “Giving Up Everything.” She sports long gray hair with confidence—yet she’s vulnerable, confined in a small space, alternating between exposing her face and hiding behind a mask. As stated by NPR, “Rarely is an artist as honest and revealing as Natalie Merchant.”
